You put on deodorant. You put on perfume. Somewhere between the two, your armpits and your wrists start arguing about who smells better.
Most of us never test it. The deodorant is whatever's in the bathroom. The perfume is whatever we love. We hope for the best. It usually works out. When it doesn't, you notice by lunch.
The good news: they're not fighting over chemistry. They're fighting over scent. And scent is the one part of this you get to choose.
So can you wear natural deodorant and solid perfume together? Yes. There are three ways to do it, and all three work.
Deodorant and perfume do different jobs
Deodorant goes on your underarms. Our magnesium-enriched sticks neutralise odour. That's the whole brief.
Perfume goes on your pulse points, or wherever you'd normally wear it. It's there for scent. It doesn't claim to do anything about odour or wetness, and we'd never dress it up as if it does.
Every scented Viva deodorant and every Viva perfume gets its scent from essential oils. No synthetic fragrance in either. So when the two meet, it's plant oils next to plant oils, and the only question is whether the scents get along.
If you're new to all this, our guide to what to expect in week one of natural deodorant covers the deodorant side. And if you want the science of why solid perfume behaves the way it does, Natural Perfume 101 has you covered.
Play one: match them
Same scent, top to bottom. It's the easiest play, and it's where we'd start.
Patchouli Rose Deodorant and Patchouli Rose Perfume both carry patchouli oil and rose geranium oil. The deodorant's own product page says it outright: if you love the scent, layer it with the perfume.
Lavender Fresh Deodorant (lavender and palmarosa oils) and Lavender & Ylang Ylang Perfume (lavender and ylang ylang oils) share lavender. Same family, different accents.
Can't be bothered shopping around? The Patchouli Rose Perfection Trio and the Lavender Love Trio are this play in a box. Deodorant, perfume and soap, one scent, built for layering.

Play two: go unscented underneath
Some perfumes don't come with a matching stick. Sandalwood, Flower and Ocean Breeze are all signature scents with no deodorant sibling.
That's where the Sensitive Unscented Deodorant earns its spot. No added essential oils, no added fragrance. Your perfume is the only scent in the room.
It's also the pick if your skin is reactive. Like every Viva deodorant, it leaves out bi-carb, and The Sensitivity Question explains why that matters.
One honest note. Perfume is made with essential oils, and both labels say to stop using if irritation occurs. Reactive skin should meet a new scent gently, and a Scent Card is the easy way to do it (more on that below).
Play three: pair by shared note
Not every scent has a twin. That's fine. Find one note two products share and let that be the handshake.
| Deodorant | Perfume | The note they share |
|---|---|---|
| Patchouli Rose | Flower | Rose geranium |
| Lavender Fresh | Flower | Lavender |
| Lavender Fresh | Ocean Breeze | Lavender |
| Lavender Fresh | Lavender & Ylang Ylang | Lavender |
| Patchouli Rose | Patchouli Rose | Patchouli and rose geranium |
Sandalwood doesn't share a note with either scented deodorant. That makes it a natural fit for play two.

How to layer without overdoing it
- Deodorant first. Apply two to four super light swipes to freshly washed, clean skin. It has a dry finish, so it's tempting to overdo it. Don't. Too much just causes build-up and staining.
- Perfume second. Two to three light swipes on your pulse points, or wherever you'd normally wear perfume.
- Reapply as needed. Our perfume is handmade without synthetic fixatives, so you may reapply a little more often. That's the trade for pure botanical ingredients.
- Store both somewhere cool, out of direct sunlight. That means not the car dashboard and not the sunny windowsill. Summer is coming.

Common myths, busted
Myth: perfume can do deodorant's job. Perfume is there for scent. It doesn't claim to control odour. That's deodorant's job, which is why you wear both.
Myth: you need a matching set. Matching is one of three plays. Going unscented underneath works just as well, and so does pairing by shared note.
Myth: natural means picking between smelling good and staying fresh. Deodorant handles the freshness. Perfume handles the scent. You get both, and there's no plastic in either. If you want the deeper case for solid over spray, Solid Perfume vs Spray lays it out.
Try before you commit
Not sure two scents will get on? Don't guess. Every Viva perfume has a Scent Card, so you can wear the scent before you commit to a full tube: Patchouli Rose, Lavender & Ylang Ylang, Ocean Breeze, Sandalwood and Flower.
Wear one for a day alongside the deodorant you already use. If the two get along, you've got your answer. If they don't, you've lost nothing but a card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you wear natural deodorant and perfume at the same time?
Yes. Deodorant goes on your underarms and perfume goes on your pulse points, so they don't compete for space. The only thing that can clash is scent. Match them, go unscented underneath with the Sensitive Unscented Deodorant, or pair two scents that share a note.
Should I put on deodorant or perfume first?
Deodorant first, because it goes on freshly washed, clean skin. Then perfume, with two to three light swipes on your pulse points. Keep both to light swipes. More product doesn't mean more scent, it just means more build-up.
Can I put solid perfume on my underarms?
We'd keep perfume to pulse points. Our perfume instructions say pulse points or wherever you would normally apply perfume, and it doesn't claim to control odour or wetness. Underarms are deodorant's job, so let it do that job.
Which perfume goes with Patchouli Rose deodorant?
Patchouli Rose Perfume. Both carry patchouli oil and rose geranium oil, and the deodorant's product page says you can layer the two. The Patchouli Rose Perfection Trio puts deodorant, perfume and soap in one scent.
What should I wear if I have sensitive skin?
Start with the Sensitive Unscented Deodorant. It has no added essential oils, no added fragrance and no bi-carb. Perfume is made with essential oils, so try a Scent Card first. Both labels say to stop using if irritation occurs.
How often do I need to reapply solid perfume?
As often as you like. Our perfume is handmade without synthetic fixatives, so you may reapply a little more often. That's the trade for pure botanical ingredients. Each tube lasts for months, so reapplying isn't a big ask.
Is the packaging plastic-free?
Yes. Our deodorant and perfume both come in a cardboard tube and are 100% plastic-free. When a tube is finished, cut it up and pop it in your home compost, bury it in the garden, or use your home recycling bin.
Real talk.
Two scents. One body. No referee needed.
Match them with Patchouli Rose Deodorant and Patchouli Rose Perfume, keep it quiet underneath with Sensitive Unscented Deodorant, or find the one note they share. Any of the three works. The only wrong move is leaving one of them at home.
Still deciding? Grab a Scent Card and let your armpits and your wrists work it out between themselves.
